The one-act “SALOME” was created by Strauss based on the German translation of the play by Oscar Wilde, written in 1891 in French. The premiere on December 9, 1905 at the Royal Opera House in Dresden shocked the audience with its eroticism, cruelty and pathological passion. it was difficult to find a performed who would agree to dance with the seven veils and its performance was initially banned in the Wien Opera. But very soon Salome part became the crowning role for the greatest performers around the world with the wide range of vocal and artistic qualities it required. In the musical fabric Strauss weft much of Wagner's concept of recitative-declamatory singing, continuous, richly symphonic construction, leitmotifs. But it achieved a new, sharp, strongly chromatized harmony, with unusual modulations, abrupt shifts, polytonality. The climax is the last paroxysmal scene, when Salome kisses the severed head of John the Baptist and, shocked, Herod orders his soldiers to kill her.
