Aurora

AURORA by KRISTJAN JÄRVI is a deeply personal work, part of the album Nordic Escapes, which reflects an inner journey through states of love, sadness, longing, and hope. The piece is conceived as a musical embodiment of the natural phenomenon of the aurora borealis, in which light, colors, and darkness coexist in a dynamic, breathing balance. The music unfolds emotionally toward the discovery of a new beginning, embodied in the image of Aurora, a symbol of light, change, and rebirth. The composer identifies the idea of Aurora with the duality of Goethe’s famous phrase “from supreme joy to deep sorrow” (“Himmelhoch jauchzend, zu Tode betrübt”). This range of emotions forms the basis of the musical dramaturgy, which does not pit emotions against one another but rather combines them into a single internal process. In this way, it intertwines the idea of a new beginning and the flame of the past, past and future in a continuous stream of sound. The work is part of the Baltic Philharmonic’s repertoire, with soloist David Nebel appearing in some of the performances. As part of the Nordic Escapes and Nordic Amazonia programs, the piece is often performed as part of a comprehensive, uninterrupted concert experience, frequently presented without score, which enhances the sense of immediacy and emotional authenticity. In some concepts, Aurora is accompanied by visual elements from the Glowing Bulbs project, which further emphasize the luminous, almost cinematic character of the music. The sound is minimalist in style, flowing in an emotionally captivating stream with a hypnotic effect. The goal is for Aurora to be not merely a concert piece, but a holistic sensory experience in which sound and light merge into the overall image of natural radiance - of the Aurora.
