Symphony No.101 "The Clock" in D major

Symphony No. 101 is the ninth of the so-called 'London Symphonies', composed in 1793/94, for the composer's second visit to London. It has been given the name "THE CLOCK" because of the ticking-like rhythm in the second movement. The premiere was on 3 March 1794 at the Hanover Square Rooms (or Queen's Concert Rooms), greeted with a standing ovation from the audience, and the Morning Chronicle reviewer noted: 'The most delightful part of the event as always, was Haydn's grand new symphony - the inexhaustible, wonderful, sublime Haydn ! The first two movements were encored, and the character that pervades the whole composition is a sincere joy. Every new symphony he wrote, before we heard it, we feared that he might repeat himself; and every time we were wrong."
