Rosen aus dem Süden
About the work
Three pieces from the numerous orchestral opuses of Johann Strauss II will be performed. The waltz Roses from the South (Rosen aus dem Süden), op. 388 was composed in 1880. As in all his major concert waltzes, the composer brings together and develops several waltz themes in one form. In this case they are taken from his operetta The Queen's Lace Handkerchief. The waltz was first performed at the regular Sunday concerts of the Strauss Orchestra under the baton of Eduard Strauss on 7 November 1880 in the famous Musikverein - Vienna. In the second printed edition of this popular waltz, the composer dedicated it to Umberto I, King of Italy.
