Sonata in D major for Trumpet and Оrgan

The delightful Sonata in D major for trumpet and strings, Z. 850 (also available in an arrangement for trumpet and organ) was probably written towards the end of his life and published in 1694. Scholars have named as inspirers of the piece John Shore or his uncle William Shore, the most famous trumpeters of England at the time. Purcell's perception of this instrument becomes outright clear with the graceful and cheerful main theme of the opening movement, which resembles fanfare. The sonata is written after the model of the Italian trio sonatas. In the middle slow movement – a sequence of sweet melancholic harmonies – the soloist takes a rest, in order to rush with renewed momentum in the finale. The lively rhythmic energy carries the dancing spirit of the gigue.
