Goodnight moon

The composer talks about his piece Goodnight Moon for choir and piano: "During the first six years of my son's life, I read Goodnight Moon to him at least a thousand times, probably more. As I read it for the 500th time, I started to hear little musical fragments, which gradually evolved into a simple, sweet lullaby. I asked my manager to contact HarperCollins to see if they would allow the text to be set to music. Much to my surprise and delight, they agreed – this was the first time they had ever allowed it." Eric Whitacre's Goodnight Moon is a choral adaptation of the classic children's book of the same name by Margaret Wise Brown (1910–1952). The music stays true to the style of the book, creating an atmosphere of evening comfort and parental warmth and love. 'Goodnight Moon' is written in one continuous form with no repetitions, following the narrative of the text.
