Galactic Concerto for Piano and Orchestra

In recent years, Georgi Cherkin has been actively engaged in composition and orchestration alongside his career as a concert pianist. He creates orchestral arrangements of well-known piano works, aiming to enrich the original piano texture with the diverse palette of symphonic sound. Among his transcriptions for piano and orchestra are Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons, Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Paganini, Mozart’s Rondo alla Turca, Debussy’s Clair de Lune, Schumann’s Novelette, Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in G minor, and others. His most ambitious work to date is the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra "Galactic Fantasy." Cherkin shares the story behind the piece: “The idea for Galactic Fantasy was born in the spring of 2023. I first heard the introduction in my imagination—music that reminded me of a spaceship taking off, overcoming gravity, and embarking on a fantastic journey through space. This beginning inspired me to improvise, to explore themes, harmonies, and sound colors that would match this stellar atmosphere. Thus, the concerto gradually took shape— the result of nearly a year of complete dedication and a dream I had long carried within me, as the genre of the piano concerto has always been closest to my heart. I called the work Galactic Fantasy because its form is freer and more imaginative, though it retains the spirit of the classical concerto—with its brilliance, the dialogue between soloist and orchestra, and dramatic tension. The orchestration is rich and dynamic: the orchestra is not merely an accompaniment, but an equal partner, whose energy often intertwines with the piano’s virtuosic texture. The thematic material includes three main themes and several leitmotifs—among them the ‘leitmotif of light and darkness’ and the ‘leitmotif of fate.’ The composition unfolds a kind of battle between good and evil—both within the human soul and in a broader cosmic sense. I wanted the entire work to feel like a continuous journey through the galaxy—with contrasts ranging from intimacy, mysticism, and nostalgia, to joy, rapture, and an explosive final triumph. From the very beginning, I envisioned this sonic journey as a visual experience as well. I dreamed of bringing the music to life through 3D mapping. To that end, I invited the artists from Elektrik.me—some of the leading creators in this field. They were inspired by the music and created a visual world that breathes in sync with the orchestra and the piano. The result was the premiere at Bulgaria Hall—the first concert of its kind in the hall’s history—which was met with great success. With this work, I want to share with the audience the wonder of the universe, our inner struggle and striving toward light, and the spiritual elevation that music can offer—even beyond the horizon.” The Galactic Fantasy piano concerto is structured in four interconnected movements, performed without pause:

1. Allegro maestoso — Defying Gravity
2. Allegro scherzando — Celestial Illusion
3. Moderato espressivo — Beyond the Horizon
4. Andante moderato — Glory of Eternity

The world premiere took place on September 16^th , 2023, at Bulgaria Hall as part of the European Music Festival, with the Cantus Firmus Orchestra conducted by Grigor Palikarov and Georgi Cherkin as soloist. The work was subsequently performed on a national tour, including a concert at the Ancient Theater in Plovdiv and, most recently, on October 17^th , 2025, in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
