Polonaise in A-flat major, “Héroïque”, Op. 53

Polonaise in A flat major "Heroic" opus 53 was composed in 1842. According to some researchers of the composer's work, it is possible that the early edition of the work dates back to 1836. The play was published in 1843 and is entirely dedicated to the celebration of the past but inexhaustible glory and power of Poland. Together with the polonaise in F sharp minor, this is the most spectacular of all Chopin's polonaises, with a truly orchestral power of texture, achieved through a massive octave and chord technique. The piece requires exceptional piano skills and great virtuosity to be interpreted at a high degree of proficiency and it is also very physically demanding. Probably for this reason, according to his student Adolphe Gutmann, Chopin played it more gently than most performers. The polonaise in A flat major opus 53 is dedicated to Auguste Léo, a German banker and friend of Chopin. According to the Polish historian Zdzisław Jachymski, this is Chopin's "peak in Polonaise's work," a work that needs no praise. The German musicologist and composer Hugo Leichtentritt added: "Everything about brilliance, dignity, strength and enthusiasm is embodied in this masterpiece, in the most delightful way." And pianist Arthur Rubinstein exclaims, "This is the composition that is closest to my heart!"
