Ein Wallfahrtslied

Ein Wallfahrtslied (“Pilgrim’s Song”) by Arvo Pärt, based on Psalm 121 (120), is one of roughly ten works that form his cycle of musical biblical psalms. These pieces are not merely a “reading” of the text, but a way for the composer to address God melodically on the fundamental questions of existence. In an interview, Pärt explained: “I have always relied on texts that have been particularly close to me and filled with existential meaning. This is something that has taken root very deeply and rises high above me. It is essentially about the quality or subordination that has nourished the world for centuries. If we take a period of two thousand years, we will see that man has changed little, and that is why I believe that sacred texts are always very relevant. From this point of view, there is no big difference between yesterday, today, and tomorrow, because there are truths that do not lose their power.” Stylistically, the work again combines past and present: Pärt preserves the characteristics of ancient psalmody while interpreting them through contemporary means. The psalm resounds with confession, repentance, prayer, and silence.
