Chamber Symphony No. 1 in E major, Op. 9

In 1906 Schoenberg wrote his first Chamber symphony for 15 solo instruments. At the same time, Mahler created his Eighth, the giant Symphony of the Thousand (1906), and Scriabin composed The Poem of Ecstasy (1907). The search for this chamber is not only the beginning of a new path for Schoenberg, in his own words (followed by his chamber monooperas), but also the beginning of the revolt of new music, the natural reaction after the hypertrophied, as if exhausting postromantic symphonic canvases. The experimenting authors are trying to find a new expression in the chamber as a performing apparatus, but also as a space and as an audience, which in turn leads to socio-cultural confrontation. CHAMBER SYMPHONY № 1 premiered on February 8^th , 1907 in the Great Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna performed by the Rose Quartet and a wind ensemble of the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of the author. It was performed again on March 31^st , 1913 in the so-called "scandalous concert", together with works by Schoenberg's teacher - Alexander von Zemlinsky, Anton Webern and Alban Berg, whose Five Songs based on lyrics by Peter Altenberg provoked public protest and interruption of the concert. And this was the beginning of a series of "scandals" in the annals of new music of the twentieth century. Schoenberg and the New Viennese responded to the public misunderstanding by founding the Society for Private Musical Performances and Concerts for the Initiates in 1918, in which more than 360 new works were performed in three years.
