THE ROMANCE FOR VIOLIN AND STRING ORCHESTRA, Op. 11 was commissioned by Josef Markus, leader of the orchestra of the Provisional Theatre in Prague, for the orchestra’s annual concert at the Žofín Palace. The premiere performance took place on 9 December 1877, conducted by Adolf Cech. Romance in F minor originated as a reworking of the introductory part Andante con moto quasi allegretto of the second movement of the composer’s String Quartet No. 5 in F minor, written in 1873, when he was not yet very well known and the quartet had not yet been performed. Dvorak also wrote an arrangement of Romance with piano accompaniment. The orchestral version and the arrangement for violin and piano were published by Simrock in 1879.
Mincho Minchev’s performance under the baton of Dobrin Petkov with the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra was released on record by Balkanton, 1985.
