Bulgaria Concert Hall

About the venue

Bulgaria Hall is the largest hall in the Bulgaria Concert Complex, built in 1937. The building is considered an example of modernism in Bulgarian architecture from the interwar period.

In 1974, an organ built by the Schuke company in Potsdam was installed in the hall. Featuring three manuals, 55 stops, mechanical action and eight Setzer combinations, it remains the largest organ in Bulgaria to this day. The specific characteristics of its stops and mechanical action make it possible to achieve an authentic sound in performances of both Baroque and contemporary music.

In the summer of 2011, the Ministry of Culture carried out a major renovation of the Bulgaria Concert Complex. Funding for the renovation and modernization of the building was provided under the Operational Programme “Regional Development 2007–2013.”

An interesting comparison can be made between Bulgaria Hall as it originally appeared and as it stands today. When it was built in 1937, the hall had 1,470 seats and an Organ with four manuals, 72 registers and electro-pneumatic action.

Following its restoration, the hall has 1,087 seats and an Organ with three manuals, 55 registers and mechanical action.

Today, Bulgaria Hall is a major venue for performances by Bulgarian and international artists and ensembles, hosting concerts, competitions, recording sessions, showcases, festivals, lectures and other events.
