THE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA OF THE REPUBLIC OF NORTHERN MACEDONIA was founded on 24 November 1944 on the initiative of the composer Todor Skalovski. In its 80-year history, the Orchestra has become one of the main leaders of the country’s musical life and an ambassador of Macedonian art throughout the world. Its repertoire ranges from the Baroque to the music of the 21st century. The North Macedonian Philharmonic performs world premieres by contemporary composers as well as works by national composers. It has toured Belgium, Spain, Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, the Netherlands, Italy, the USA, South America, Russia, etc.

Numerous conductors have led the orchestra, such as the founders Todor Skalovski and Trajko Prokopiev, followed by Lovro von Matačić, Vancho Chavdarski, Fimcho Muratovski, Carlo Zecchi, Neeme Järvi, Igor Markevich, Pero Petrovski, and more recently Sasha Nikolovski-Gjumar, Borjan Canev, Yuri Temirkanov, Uros Lajovic, Emil Tabakov, Timothy Redmond, Krzysztof Penderecki, Yeruham Scharowsky, Daniel Raiskin, to name but a few.

Soloists with the orchestra have included renowned vocal and instrumental artists such as Henryk Szeryng, Aldo Ciccolini, Leonid Kogan, André Navarra, Jose Carreras, David Garrett, Valery Sokolov, Isabelle Faust, Ann Hallenberg, Emmanuel Pahud, Daniel Müller-Schott, Boris Berezovsky, Akiko Suwanai, Sergei Krylov, Ning Feng, Amy Dickson, István Várdai, Midori Goto, Alexei Volodin, Simon Trpcheski, Dino Imeri.

The orchestra has made numerous recordings for the Macedonian Radio and Television and for foreign companies, and educational concerts for children play an important role in the institution’s programming policy.
