Paul Hertel

Paul Hertel (b. 1953) is a well-known Austrian composer, arranger, conductor and music producer. He graduated with a PhD in theatre studies from the University of Vienna and in composition from the University of Music in Vienna (under Erik Urbaner). He studied electroacoustics (with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati), jazz harmony (with Heinz Chadek) and choral conducting (with Günther Theuring) in specialized courses.

Before going freelance, he has worked as theatre composer and music director at Theater für Vorarlberg. In parallel, he began to write music for films and television productions, and the creation of original stage works, especially operas for children, became the focus of his work. Among his well-known opuses are:  Askalun the musical; the children’s operas Rabautz, Elster & Palzivar; the chamber operas Der Kaiserinen, MozartAutomat, The Last Play, etc. His works for symphony and chamber orchestras, for various ensembles and instruments, his solo songs and electronic music are distinguished by a great variety of ideas and forms. In his compositions, Paul Hertel uses contrasting stylistic approaches, including avant-garde, contemporary techniques, which he masterfully refracts through his individuality. They have been performed with success on major international opera stages and concert halls, in renowned forums and new music festivals.

While still a student, Hertel began to present contemporary music in a communicative way with a series of broadcasts for Austrian Radio and Television. He co-founded Project Premieres (now Creatives Centrum, Vienna) in 1979 and over the course of 21 seasons organized the performance of more than 800 works (including 220 premieres) by 250 composers in concerts around the world and in Austria.

Paul Hertel has held positions of responsibility in the Society of Austrian Authors, Composers and Music Publishers (AKM) and the Society for Austrian Music (GFÖM). He has been honored with many awards for his work, including the honorable mention “Best Film Music Composer” at the 12th Fair Film Festival. He is a member of the “Free Academy of the Arts Mannheim”.
