Evgeni Tikotsky

Evgeni Tikotsky (1893–1970) was a Belarusan composer of Polish descent, born in St. Petersburg. He studied composition in St. Petersburg (1912-14) before pursuing the study of physics and mathematics at the University there (1914-15). He taught in Bobruysk, and then settled in Minsk, where he taught at the music school (1934-41); was artistic director of the Belorussian State Phil. (1944-45; 1953-57). In 1944, he received the Order of Lenin and in 1955 was made a People’s Artist of the U.S.S.R. He wrote the operas Mihas Podhorny, and Alesya, five symphonies, Trombone Concerto, Concerto for Piano and Belorussian Folk Orch. (also for Piano and Sym. Orch.), Slava Overture, chamber works, choruses, folk song arrangements, and film scores.
