Tiago Matos

Owner of “a scenic and vocal ease” and of “a well-placed and supple voice”, Tiago Matos is, according to the critics, “a confirmed baritone”.
He first arrived at the Opéra National de Paris in 2012, when he joined the Atelier Lyrique, starring Mozart’s Don Giovanni. His debut in the main cast came two years later, when he played Fiorello in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Other roles like Un Chevalier in Chausson’s Le Roi Arthus and Il Marchese d’Obigny in Verdi’s La Traviata followed. He also played Un Députée Flamand in Don Carlos, as well as Il Conte Ceprano in Rigoletto, both by Verdi. In his most recent performance with L’Académie de l’ONP, Tiago played Frank in J. Strauss’s Die Fiedermaus and it earned him the greatest compliments. Among Tiago’s many performances, we must highlight Le Dancaïre and Moralès in Bizet’s Carmen; Mercutio in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette; L’Horloge Comtoise and Le Chat in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges; and once more the leading part in Don Giovanni, in the Estates Theatre, Prague. Awarded the first prize in the VI Concurso da Fundação Rotária Portuguesa, Tiago performed with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in “Composing for Voices with Luís Tinoco”. He similarly performed solo in masterpieces like Lieder Eines fahrenden Gesellen by Mahler, Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven and Requiem by Fauré. Tiago has a degree in Music by the University of Aveiro, where he learned from teachers like Isabel Alcobia and António Chagas Rosa. He later studied with Sherrill Milnes and Maria Zouves, whom he met at the VOICExperience Foundation, in the United States. Nowadays he keeps perfectioning his technique with Michelle Wegwart. Tiago is one of the founders of Plateia Protagonista, a cultural and educational association which promotes opera and classical music. Among other projects, this founding created the “Ópera Connosco Marvila!”, aiming to attract young people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods around Lisbon. This enterprise will see Tiago as sergeant Belcore in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore. After his performance in the Lisbon Operafest 2020, where Tiago had the honour to premiere operas by young Portuguese composers, he will soon play the Duque and the Enforcado in Joly Braga Santos’ Trilogia das Barcas at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos. Other planned performances are a participation in the Festival Informal de Ópera de Braga, a concert around Bach and Händel directed by Laurence Cummings with the Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música and Mozart’s Requiem, with the Orquestra Clássica do Centro. Later this year, Tiago will perform in a recital with the trio À la Joie! in the Festival Internacional de Música de Marvão.
