Sergio Oliva

SERGIO OLIVA was born in Rome. Having graduated from the Conservatory of S. Cecilia and simultaneously in law, he began his musical activity, specializing in the operatic field, collaborating in numerous opera and foreign seasons as choirmaster, substitute teacher, stage
director.

In 1979 he made his debut as conductor at the summer symphonic season of S. Cecilia in Rome. In the same year, he took the post of artistic director of the Roman Opera where he produced such large-scale repertoire works as: La Sonnambula, Aida, Nabucco, Rigoletto, Roberto Devereux, La Bohéme, Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot, both indoors and on the open stage of the Terme di Caracalla.

In the process of work he co-operated with a number of singers: Eva Marton, Raina Kabaivanska, Fiorenza Cossotto, Leo Nucci, Nicola Martinucci, Giorgio Merighi, Silvano Carroli, Nicola Ghiuselev, Grace Bumbry, Leona Mitchell, Renato Bruson, etc.

He has also been active in many Italian and foreign opera and symphonic institutions including: Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Arena di Verona, Politeama di Lecce, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Luglio Trapanese, Luglio Livornese, Concertgebow in Amsterdam, Hibiki Holl by Kita Kyushu, Haotea Center Aukland, Ankara Opera House, Seoul Arts Center, Beijing International Festival, Shanghai Festival, Lever Kusen Arena, St. Gallen Theater, Bergen Grieghalle In the mid-eighties, he launched an international career which took him to many European and extra-European countries: England, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Japan, New Zealand, China, South Korea and Brazil. He was professor of orchestra conducting at the Conservatory of S. Cecilia in Rome; artistic director of the Euridice Association; guest conductor of the Kiusciu Simphony, lecturer in opera interpretation at the Boris Christoff Academy, teacher of orchestra conducting and interpretation
of melodrama at AIDM (International Academy of Music in Rome).
