Sabine Meyer

SABINE MEYER is one of the most celebrated contemporary instrumentalists, with a major contribution to the establishment of the clarinet as a solo instrument on the concert podium. Born in Crailsheim, Baden-Württemberg, she studied with Otto Hermann in Stuttgart and Hans Dainzer in Hanover. She began her career in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, then was a solo clarinettist in the Berlin Philharmonic, meanwhile becoming increasingly in demand as a soloist. For more than 30 years already she has performed in all the musical centres of Europe, in Brazil, Israel, Canada, USA, Japan, China and Australia. She has soloed with over 300 orchestras - all the major orchestras in Germany and leading world ensembles such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Japan Radio Symphony Orchestra (NHK)-Tokyo, Berlin Philharmonic, Radio Symphony Orchestras of Vienna, Basel, Warsaw, Prague, Budapest and many others. In 2018, she gave 19 concerts as resident soloist at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival. Sabine Meyer’s special affection belongs to chamber music, where she places value on long-term, continuous cooperation. In various compositions she has performed with such artists as Christiane Karg, Martin Helmchen, Antje Weithaas, Veronika Hagen, Bertrand Chamayu, Niels Mönkemeyer, William Yun and the Armida Quartet. In the 2023/2024 season in trio with Fatma Said and Malcolm Martineau she will have concerts in Aalen, Munich, Wartburg, Eisenach, Antwerp and Oldenburg. Season highlights also include performances with the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, the Hanseatic Philharmonic Orchestra of Lübeck and the Orquesta Ciudad in Granada. She is a premier interpreter of contemporary music and has written a number of works for the orchestra by Jean Françaix, Edison Denissov, Toshio Hosokawa, Niccolo Castiglioni, Manfred Trojahn, Aribert Reimann, Peter Eötvös and Marton Illés. Sabine Meyer has made numerous recordings at EMI Classics (now Warner Classic); furthermore, there are recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, for Sony and for CAvi-music. The recorded repertoire ranges from pre-classical to contemporary compositions and includes all important works for clarinet. For Sony she recorded arias by Mozart arranged for clarinet, Trio in A Minor with Niels Mönkemeyer and William Youn, and most recently Fantasia, with the Alliage Quintet. In addition to her eight-time “Echo Klassik” award, Sabine Meyer is a member of the “Academy of Arts Hamburg” and was awarded the Order “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres’ by the French government.
