Romain Garioud

ROMAIN GARIOUD is already known to Sofia audiences for his very recent performance as soloist this February, in concert with the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Georgi Dimitrov. He is prize winner at such prestigious international competitions as Moscow Tchaikovsky (2001) and Paris Rostropovitch (2002), second prize winner at Vina del Mar Competition, Chile, in 2002, and in 2005 won the First Prize at the Valentino Bucchi International Violoncello Competition. He graduated from the Paris Conservatoire, the Ecole National Supérieur de Musique with first prizes in cello and chamber Music (1997, 1998). Known for his outstanding sound and sense of phrasing, Romain Garioud has had the privilege of working with such widely renowned cellists as Philippe Muller, Anner Bylsma, Natalia Chakovskaia, David Geringas, Steven Isserlis… Today, his creative activity includes solo performances alternating with master classes all over the world, alongside his commitments as a soloist of the Koblenz Rhineland Philharmonic Orchestra. In October 2013, he performed Lutosławski's Violoncello Concerto at Yuri Bashmet's festival in Minsk with the television orchestra. In June 2016, Garioud was invited to the Marta Argerich Project at the Lugano Festival to replace Natalia Gutman as a soloist in Shostakovitch's First Violoncello Concerto with the Casa da Musica Orchestra (Portugal). Forthcoming in May is his performance of Dvořák's Violoncello Concerto with the Aalborg Philharmonic Orchestra (Denmark), conducted by Michael Sanderling, and from April to August will substitute for Prof. Jean-Guihen Queyras Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. Garioud has performed under the baton of such conductors as Christoph Eschenbach (Orchestre de Paris), Jean-Marc Burfin (Lisbon’s Metropolitan Orchestra) Stéphane Cardon or Volodymir Sirenko (National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine) and with prestigious chamber music partners like Mstislav Rostropovitch, Menahem Presler, Gilles Apap, Philippe Entremont, Regie and Bruno Pasquier-Desvignes in the most famous concert halls, Musikverein and Konzerthaus Wien, Berlin Philharmonie. His concert performances have been recorded by Radio France and the Mezzo Television Channel. Since 2016, he has been a member of the Vesna Ensemble, along with violinist Natalia Priessenko and violist Aida-Carmen Soanea. He plays an outstanding instrument produced by Nicolai Gagliano in 1760, lent by Gabriele & Michael Andreae-Jäckering.
