The legendary composer’s duo – Robert B. Sherman (1925–2012) and Richard M. Sherman (b. 1928) was an integral part of Walt Disney’s Film Studios for many decades. The two brothers, sons of Russian immigrant Al Sherman (a Tin Pan Alley composer), began writing music as early as 1951. In 1958, they reached their first major success with the song, Tall Paul. It was that song that drew the attention of Walt Disney, who then hired the composers into his productions. Later, the duo went on to compose songs that would win multiple Academy Awards and Grammy Awards. Among their famous titles are Mary Poppins, the animated films Jungle Book, Winnie-The-Pooh, and many others. The composers’ long-lasting collaboration, however, was not always an easy one. A 2009 documentary titled The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story, tells the story of their amazing musical career. The Mary Poppins Suite, arranged by Bruce Healey and Ken Whitcomb contains some of the most brilliant melodies, found in the musical – Chim Chim Cher-ee, Jolly Holiday, Supercali and Step In Time. In 2008, the Sherman Brothers receive the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor bestowed upon artists from the United States Government.
