Peter Laul

Leningrad-born PETER LAUL (1977) grew up in a family of musicians and graduated successively from the Music School and the St. Petersburg N. А. Rimsky-Korsakov under prof. Alexander Sandler (2000). He has won prizes at international competitions that helped his way around European stages: third prize and special prize for the best performance of J. S. Bach's music (1995), first prize and special prize for the best performance of Schubert's sonata at the International Piano Competition in Bremen (1997), first prize at the International Scriabin Piano Competition in Moscow (2000). In 2003 he was awarded the Medal of Honour "For Achievements in Art" by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. Since 2002 he has been teaching piano classes at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He has played as a soloist under the baton of such outstanding musicians as Maxim Shostakovich, Valery Gergiev, Vasily Sinaisky, Yuri Simonov, Eri Klas, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Michail Jurowski, Nikolai Znaider and Nikolai Alexeev with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Moscow State Philharmonic, with the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Südwestdeutsche Rundfunk, the Dessau, Bremerhaven and Oldenburg Orchestras (Germany), the National Symphony Orchestra of Brazil, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and the chamber orchestras of Tallinn (Estonia) and Les Siècles (France). As a chamber musician he has had remarkable partnerships with the Borodin Quartet, Dmitry Kоuzov, Marc Coppey, Maxim Vengerov, Viktor Tretiakov, Ilya Gringolts, Graf Murzha, Sergei Levitin, and Alena Baeva, Valeriy Sokolov, Alexander Ghindin, Diemut Poppen, Françoise Groben, Maja Bogdanović, Gary Hoffman, David Grimal, Lawrence Power, Paul Mayer, Romain Guillot, François-Frédéric Guy, Laurent Korcia and Tedi Papavrami. In addition to appearing on the great stages of St. Petersburg and the Moscow Conservatoire, he has appeared at London's Wigmore Hall, the Auditorium du Louvre, the Salle Gaveau, the Théâtre de la Ville, the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Salle Moliere and the Lyon Opera House, New York's Lincoln Center, and Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Vredenburg in Utrecht, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Casino Basel, Die Glocke in Bremen, Montpellier Corum, Sapienza University in Rome, Verdi Hall in Milan, Suntory Hall and Opera City Hall in Tokyo, the Luxembourg Philharmonic, Le Theatre de la Monnaie in Brussels and in numerous venues in Russia, Europe, Japan and the USA. Some of his most recent concerts are part of the programmes of the Serres d'Auteuil Festival in Paris, the Progetto Marta Argerich in Lugano, Les Musicales in Colmar, Arts Square, The Stars of White Nights and The Faces of International Pianism in St Petersburg, "Art November" in Moscow, the Kamchatka Spring Festival, the Saint-Riquier Festival, the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Ireland, the Łańcut Spring Festival in Poland and Le Printemps des Arts in Monaco. In 2015, he performed the complete cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas in St. Petersburg, and in the 2016-2017 season, he performed Scriabin's piano music in a cycle of six recitals in St Petersburg and Moscow. He has recorded for Harmonia Mundi, Aeon, Audite, BIS, Onyx, Naxos, Marquis Classics, Querstand, Integral Classics, King Records, Northern Flowers, and numerous Russian and foreign television and radio programs.
