Pande Shahov

Pande Shahov (b. 1973) was born in Skopje. He studied composition with Risto Avramovski, before enrolling at the Sts. Cyril and Methodius University Faculty of Music in Skopje, where he graduated in the class of Tomislav Zografski. He also studied Jazz harmony and arranging privately with Ilija Pejovski. As a British Council Chevening Scholar, Pande completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Composition at the Royal College of Music, studying with Julian Anderson. In 2013, he completed his doctorate at the Royal Holloway University of London, under Philip Cashian’s supervision. Pande’s music has been performed by the Macedonian Philharmonic, Sofia Philharmonic, London Mozart Players, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bolshoi Theatre Symphony Orchestra, the Choir and Orchestra of the Macedonian National Opera and Bаllet, New London Chamber Choir, Pro Ars Choir, California EAR Unit, Smith Quartet, as well as the De Ereprijs, Lontano, Ixion, Chroma, Reconsil, Kokoro, ConTempora, Freiburg Percussion Ensemble, Horizonte and Composers’ ensembles. Stage works include several theatre projects with the Macedonian director Goran Trenčovski, as well the ballet The Sound of the Water Says What I Think-a collaboration with the Estonian choreographer Teet Kask. Recent premieres include Chemin flottant for nine players received its premiere in Austria, performed by the Graz-based ensemble Zeitfluss, conducted by Edo Mičić, Till We Meet Again, a cycle of Hampshire folk songs written especially for Portsmouth Grammar School choirs and London Mozart Players, and Quintet for clarinet, violin, cello, vibraphone and piano, which received its World premiere at Festival Maribor, performed by Simon Trpčeski & Friends. In August 2020, Linn Records released the CD of his 90-min work Plaits, a commission from Simon Trpčeski for his project Makedonissimo. The recording received positive reviews from Gramophone, Songlines, Presto, Concerti, Fanfare, France Musique and Expressive Audio, as well as five stars from the BBC music Magazine. Pande lives in England and works as Assistant Director of Music at Portsmouth Grammar School and Academic Professor at the Royal College of Music in London. He is an active organiser of concerts and festivals, workshop-leader and conductor of new music.
