Nicholas Milton

NICHOLAS MILTON is renowned for his charismatic stage presence, dynamic interpretations, and musical integrity, qualities that have established him as one of Australia’s leading conductors with international acclaim. He is the principal conductor and artistic director of the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra in Sydney, Australia. Having been associated with this orchestra for nearly forty years, his leadership has guided the ensemble to an exceptional artistic rise, transforming it into one of the most respected orchestras in the country. In parallel, Milton serves as artistic director and chief conductor of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra and as chief conductor of the State Opera in Klagenfurt, Austria. From 2021 to 2025 he led a highly acclaimed new production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, which earned him a nomination for “Best Conductor” at the 2025 Austrian Music and Theater Awards. He is the only Australian conductor ever to be nominated for a Grammy Award. Milton has conducted at numerous leading opera houses, including the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Vienna Volksoper, and the Australian Opera in Sydney, as well as in Leipzig, Linz, and Innsbruck. His concert career spans Europe and Asia, featuring performances with major orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, alongside prominent German, Austrian, and Swiss ensembles including the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Radiophilharmonie Hannover, the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken, the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, the Staatsorchester Wiesbaden, the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra. Before devoting himself entirely to conducting, Nicholas Milton enjoyed an exceptional career as a violinist. At the age of nineteen he was appointed the youngest concertmaster in the history of a major Australian orchestra - the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. At the same time, he performed for eight years with the renowned Macquarie Trio. His conducting career includes leadership positions with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, the Jena Philharmonic, and the State Opera in Saarbrücken, Germany. Milton studied violin with Harry Kirby at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, after which he continued his education at Michigan State University and the Juilliard School in New York. He holds four master’s degrees and a doctorate in music from the City University of New York. In 2016 he was awarded the honorary title of Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant contributions to the arts as a musician, conductor, and artistic director. He is also an exceptionally prolific recording artist, with more than sixty albums to his credit. His recording of Brahms’s symphonies with the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra was recently nominated for “Recording of the Year” by the International Classical Music Awards.
