Nathan Rachlin

Nathan Rachlin, conductor and teacher.

He conducted concerts of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra three times. On 28.12.1960 he presented works by Bach, Debussy, Berlioz and Tchaikovsky. On 19.01.1961 with soloist Arnaldo Estrella he presented works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Brahms and Tchaikovsky, and the next day Chopin and Vladigerov were added to these composers.

He was born in Ukraine. As a child he played the violin in a klezmer ensemble, as well as in the local cinema. In 1922 he played the trumpet at the Higher Military School in Kiev. He continued to study violin at the Kiev Conservatory, and then conducting at the Higher Music and Drama Institute. From 1931 to 1935 he studied at the music theory and composition faculty under Steinburg in Leningrad.

He was the conductor of the first symphony orchestra of the radio in Kharkov, worked in Kuibyshev, created and was the chief conductor of the symphony orchestra in Donetsk. At various times he was the chief conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine in Kiev.

Chief conductor of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Soviet Union in Moscow, artistic director of the Moscow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.

From 1966 until the end of his life he was the chief conductor and artistic director of the State Symphony Orchestra of the Tatar Republic.

He taught at the Kiev and Kazan Conservatories.
