Mojca Erdmann

MOJCA ERDMANN is one of the most versatile sopranos of her generation. Her remarkable international career encompasses a wide repertoire of operatic, concert and recital performances – from Mozart to contemporary music. Among the most significant events of recent years are her debut at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen as Vitellia in Mozart's La clemenza di Tito, performances as Clara and Teresa in Haubenstock-Ramati's Amerika in Zurich, and a series of concerts at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, where she performed Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire under Zubin Mehta, as well as chamber music programmes with the Berlin Staatskapelle String Quartet and the Marmen Quartet. At the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg under Kent Nagano, she performed the soprano solo in the world premiere of Alex Nante's Symphony No. 3 "Anahata". In the forthcoming season she will make her debut in the role of Elsa in Wagner's Lohengrin, and in Beijing will make her stage debut as Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Her operatic repertoire also includes Susanna in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Blanche in Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites, Donna Clara in Zemlinsky's Der Zwerg, the title role in Alban Berg's Lulu, Sophie in Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, Marzelline in Beethoven's Fidelio, and others. Mojca Erdmann is also a recognised interpreter of contemporary music. She has performed leading roles in Wolfgang Rihm's operas Proserpina (written especially for her) and Dionysos, as well as important roles in Toshio Hosokawa's Stilles Meer, Jörg Widmann's Babylon, Luca Francesconi's Quartett, Miroslav Srnka's South Pole and Schoenberg's Von heute auf morgen. The Salzburg Festival has played a significant role in her career. Her debut there in 2006 in the title role of Mozart's Zaide marked the beginning of her international rise. She has since returned to the festival as Zelmira in Haydn's Armida, as Sophie in Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier and in Rihm's Dionysos. Mojca Erdmann has appeared as a guest artist at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Opernhaus Zürich, the Hamburg State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, opera houses in Amsterdam and Tenerife, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and theatres in Palermo and Verona. As a concert singer she has appeared on the stages of the Musikverein in Vienna, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Queen Elisabeth Hall in Antwerp and Müpa Budapest, as well as at the Pfingstfestspiele in Baden-Baden, the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and the Mozart Festival in Augsburg. She has collaborated with distinguished conductors including Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim (who has also accompanied her on piano), Ivor Bolton, Kent Nagano, Sir Simon Rattle, Christoph Eschenbach, Kirill Petrenko, Adam Fischer, Jonathan Nott, Paavo Järvi and others. Her solo repertoire also includes Symphonies Nos. 4 and 8, Des Knaben Wunderhorn and the Rückert-Lieder by Mahler; the Lyric Symphony by Zemlinsky, The Creation by Haydn, the St John Passion by Bach, the Stabat Mater by Pergolesi; concert arias by Mozart and works by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf – frequently in partnership with pianist Malcolm Martineau. Her Deutsche Grammophon recordings include the album "Mozart's Garden", Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte by Mozart under Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen from the Metropolitan Opera under Fabio Luisi. Her discography also includes Mahler's Symphony No. 4, Ravel's L'Enfant et les sortilèges (Sony), "The Snow Queen" by David Philip Hefti (Neos), Orchestral Songs by Hans Sommer (Pentatone) and other recordings. Her DVD recordings include Lulu with Daniel Barenboim, Der Rosenkavalier with Franz Welser-Möst; Dionysos, Zaide and Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Opus Arte). She has also appeared in the Berlin Philharmonic's Digital Concert Hall, performing Haydn's Orlando Paladino with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Berg's Seven Early Songs with Paavo Järvi. Born in Hamburg, Mojca Erdmann began playing the violin at the age of six and sang in the children's chorus of the Hamburg State Opera. She studied violin and singing with Prof. Hans Sotin at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. She is a holder of the First Prize and the Special First Prize at the National Singing Competition in Berlin, the NDR Music Prize from the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, and the Luitpold Prize from the "Kissinger Sommer" Festival.
