Miklós Erdély

Miklós Erdély is a Hungarian conductor.

Miklós Erdély was born in Budapest and studied at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest from 1946 to 1951 with János Ferencsik (conducting), Réze Kokaj (composition) and Aladar Szalanfy (organ). He began his conducting career in Budapest in 1950–51 as assistant conductor of the Hungarian Radio Choir. From 1949 to 1951 he was conductor of the Budapest Concert Orchestra "Harmónia".

In 1957 Erdély was appointed conductor of the Budapest State Opera and soon became a highly respected opera conductor, later becoming the opera's manager. His most notable achievement with opera was the performance of works by Mozart, but he also worked to improve musical performances and conducted the premieres of some new operas. Works associated with his name include: Together and Alone (1967) by András Mihai and The Tragedy of Man (1969) by György Ranki. He also directed the Hungarian premiere of Monteverdi's The Coronation of Popeye in 1968.

In 1969, Erdeli recorded Prokofiev's War and Peace for the Radio of Rome, and from 1977 to 1982 he was a regular guest conductor of the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1986 he worked with the Tokyo Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra.

In 1960 his work was recognized with the Franz Liszt Prize, and in 1975 he won the Kossuth Prize. In 1967 he received the Artist of Merit award, and in 1985 the Outstanding Artist award. He died in Budapest.
