Tenor MICHAEL NOWAK was born in Innsbruck, Austria. His first vocal training was as a soloist of the Vienna Boys Choir. He graduated with honors from the Anton Bruckner Conservatory in Linz in the vocal class of Prof. Mag. Gerald Trabesinger. He completed his training with studies in lied and oratorio at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna with Kammersänger Kurt Equiluz. Michael Nowak was a finalist at the Mozart International Singing Competition in 1991 and prizewinner at the first International Bodensee Competition in 1992.
He was a long-time member of the ensemble of the Badische Staatstheater in Karlsruhe and Niedersächsische Staatstheater in Hanover. Nowak made numerous appearances at the opera houses of Frankfurt, Kassel, Koblenz, Helsinki, Bern, Dresden, Bregenz and Stuttgart.
He has an extensive repertoire of Baroque operas, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Puccini, Wagner, Richard Strauss, etc. He has participated in prestigious international festivals such as the Bruckner Festival in Linz (including Rhine Gold conducted by Dennis Russell Davies), Vienna Music Weeks, Danube Festival Weeks, Vienna Easter Sound Festival, the International Handel Festival in Halle, Carinthian Summer, Edinburgh International Festival. He has sung under the baton of renowned conductors such as Wolfgang Gönnenwein, Helmuth Rilling, Bernhard Klee, Peter Schreyer, Dennis Russell Davies, Manfred Honeck, Erwin Ortner to name a few. He has performed in many cities throughout Germany and abroad, including the Musikverein in Vienna, the Philharmonie and the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Philharmonie in Cologne, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Tonhalle in Zurich, etc.
Michael Nowak has made studio recordings, and has been soloist in many oratorios by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Schumann, Schoenberg, Dvořák, Bruckner, Beethoven, Verdi, Honegger, Mahler, Liszt and others.
Since 2002 he has been a singing teacher at the Upper Austrian School of Music. He is the founder and president of the NowaCanto choir and association, founded in 2011. He is also artistic director of “Schubertiade Wels” since 2016 and chairman of the association “Friends of Schubertiade Wels”.
