Maxim Lando

MAXIM LANDO (born 2002) grew up in New York and began studying piano at the age of three in a musical family—his parents, pianist Pipa Borisz and clarinettist Vadim Lando, are the founders and directors of the Great Neck Music Conservatory. He made his New York debut at six in the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players series. At ten, he began studying with Hung‑Kuan Chen, first in the Preparatory School of the New England Conservatory in Boston and later in the Pre‑College Division of the Juilliard School in New York. Since the age of eleven, he has been supported by the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, with which he has toured in Spain, Germany, Russia, and the United Kingdom. He is also a scholarship recipient of the Artemisia Akademie at Yale University, further enriching his artistic development. In 2015, he became the first American to win First Prize at the International Television Competition for Young Musicians The Nutcracker in Moscow. That same year, he received Second Prize at the Kissinger Piano Olymp competition. In 2020, he was honoured with the Gilmore Young Artist Award, and in 2024 he received the Audience Award at the International German Piano Award. A particularly notable moment in his early career came in 2017, when, at the age of fourteen, he performed alongside Lang Lang and Chick Corea at Carnegie Hall. His more recent engagements include a performance for the grand opening of Steinway & Sons Beijing, collaborations with violinists Julian Rachlin and Daniel Hope in the Rising Stars project in Munich, appearances at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, as well as participation in major festivals across Germany, the United States, France, and beyond. He has performed with leading international orchestras, among them the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, the Russian National Orchestra, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Academic Symphony Orchestra, and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. In 2022, Lando released his debut album, Into Madness, on the Berlin Classics label, recorded with violinist Tassilo Probst. The album features violin and piano sonatas by Béla Bartók, George Enescu, and Joseph Achron. In 2023, the recording received the International Classical Music Award (ICMA) in the Chamber Music category.
