Biography
MARIO MALAGNINI graduated in trombone performance from the Brescia Conservatorio and in 1984 gained a diploma in singing from the Verdi Conservatorio where he studied in the vocal class of Pier Miranda Ferraro. In 1983 he won the first prizes at the Caruso (Milano) and the Enna international competitions. He perfected his art of vocal performance under the supervision of the likes of Giuseppe di Stefano, Tito Gobbi, Franco Corelli, Carlo Bergonzi, Gianni Raimondi and Gian Giacomo Guelfi. He made his debut in 1984 in Milan with Verdi’s Il Corsaro, followed by a great personal success in Madama Butterfly in Nice and Oslo, in Simon Boccanegra in Munich and La Traviata in Bari. Today, Mario Malagnini appears on some of the world’s most prestigious opera stages, including: La Scala (Milan), L’Arena di Verona, the Deutsche Oper (Berlin), Covent Garden (London), Staatsoper (Vienna), the Paris Opera Theatre, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Monte Carlo, Nice, Moscow’s Bolshoi, Budapest, Copenhagen, Oslo, Helsinki, Tokyo, Seoul, Peking, Hong Kong, Bombay, New York, Los Angeles, Houston, San Francisco, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, and Santiago de Chili. He has sung alongside with great artists such as Renata Scotto, Montserràt Caballè, Katia Ricciarelli, Shirley Verrett, Maria Chiara, Raina Kabaivanska, Eva Marton, Ghena Dimitrova, Mirella Freni, Fiorenza Cossotto, Grace Bumbry, Agnes Baltza, Teresa Berganza, Leo Nucci, Renato Bruson, Piero Cappuccilli, Gian Giacomo Guelfi, Aldo Protti, Giorgio Zancanaro, Sherrill Milnes, Nicolai Ghiaurov and Bonaldo Giaiotti under the batons of Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Giuseppe Patané, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Placido Domingo who chose him for his productions of Carmen in Los Angeles and in another production of Aida at the Terme di Caracalla in Rome. Mario Malagnini has more than forty roles in his repertoire, among them recently the central parts in Carmen, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Aida, Othello, Nabucco, Adriana Lecouvreur, Turandot, Don Carlos, Louisa Miller, Un Ballo di Maschera and others.
