Biography

Baritone LAURENCE KALAIDJIAN is establishing himself as a promising voice of the younger generation. In the season 2024/2025 he performed at Eutiner Festspiele the role of Kilian (Der Freischütz), at Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin he perfomed in a new production of Mozart's Don Giovanni. Kalaidjian joins the Lübeck Theater in the production of Donizetti's La fille du régiment as Sulpice. Another highlight of the season is his appearance as Dr. Falke (Johann Strauss II's Die Fledermaus) at Opera Kiel. Aside from that he jumped in as Anthony Hope at Saarlandisches Staatstheater Saarbrücken and Stadttheater Hildesheim (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Stephen Sondheim). Laurence Kalaidjian was born in Hamburg and began his musical career there, in the New Boys Choir at the Jugendmusikschule (Youth Music School) (2003–2012). At the same time, he studied violin with Henning Demgenski for several years. In 2015, he began vocal training at the Hamburg University of Music and Performing Arts with Prof. Geert Smits and in the same year participated in the premiere of the children's opera Die Hamburger Sindbadauken at the Hamburg State Opera under the baton of Benjamin Gordon. He draws new inspiration for his vocal development in masterclasses with Brigitte Fassbänder, Erik Battaglia and Angela Denoke. In 2018, he won the Mozart Prize, and the following year, he won Second Prize at the Elise Meyer Competition in Hamburg. Kalaidjian has performed various roles on the opera stage, including Melisso in Handel's Alcina, Doctor Cajus in Otto Nicolai's The Merry Wives of Windsor, Wotan in Wagner's Das Rheingold, and Argante in Handel's Rinaldo. From March 2022 to June 2024, he is a member of the Opera Studio at the Lübeck Theater, where he has already performed the roles of Dr. Falke and Anthony Hope, Sid (Albert Herring by Britten) and Paolo (Simon Boccanegra by Verdi), the Messenger (Christophe Colomb by Darius Milhaud). He also participates in Dido and Aeneas by Purcell and The Miracle of Heliana by Korngold. In 2019, Kalaidjian recorded Thomas's part in the opera Jery und Bätely by Ingeborg Bronzart von Schellendorf and Abdon's part in the opera Jephtha's Vow by Meyerbeer for the Naxos label.
