Kyung Sun Lee

South Korean violinist KYUNGSUN LEE (b. 1965) is Professor of Violin at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana, USA. She has been recognized at numerous international competitions: third prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition (1993), sixth prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1994), first prizes at the Washington and D’Angelo competitions, and third prize at the Montreal International Competition (1991), where she also received the Audience Prize and the award for Best Performance of a Commissioned Work. These distinctions brought her wide popularity and high critical acclaim: “Smoothness and grace; pathos and emotion” (The Palm Beach Post), and “Penetrating clarity, a strong sense of style, and technical mastery that overcomes all difficulties with effortless ease” (Miami Herald). In addition to her career as a distinguished soloist and sought‑after chamber musician, Kyungsun Lee is an accomplished teacher. In 2001, she was appointed Assistant Professor of Violin at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and in 2006 she became Associate Professor at the University of Houston. From 2009 to 2022, she served as Professor of Violin at Seoul National University. She has also taught at the Aspen Music Festival, the Baldwin Music Festival, and the Heifetz International Music Institute. In recent years, she has served on the juries of several prestigious violin competitions, including the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition in Hanover, as well as international competitions in Seoul and Singapore. She is currently Music Director of the Changwon International Chamber Music Festival and the Seoul Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra. Kyungsun Lee studied at Seoul National University, the Peabody Conservatory, and the Juilliard School in the United States. Her principal teachers included Sylvia Rosenberg, Robert Mann, and Dorothy DeLay. She performs on a 1723 Joseph Guarneri violin.
