Jozef Kresánek

Slovak musicologist and composer Jozef Kresânek (1913–1986) studied composition at the Prague Conservatory. (1932–37). He started to teach in Prešov, and in 1944 was appointed a lecturer at the University of Bratislava, becoming a full professor of musical science in 1963. As a music scholar, he dedicated himself mainly to the stylistic analysis and codification of Slovak folk songs, and published numerous treatises on the subject. He also wrote publ. a monograph on Eugen Suchon (Bratislava, 1961), as well as other musical studies. His compositions include a String Quartet (1935), Piano Trio (1939), 2 suites for Violin and Piano (1947, 1951), 2 suites for Orch. (1951, 1953), Prelude and Toccata for Orch. (1957), and a Piano Quintet (1975).
