Jan Carlstedt

Swedish composer Jan Carlstedt (b. 1926) was born in Orsa. He studied composition with Lars-Erik Larsson at the Stockholm Musikhogskolan (1948–52), then pursued studies at the Royal Coll. of Music in London (1952–53) and in Rome (1953–54). Returning to Stockholm, he became active in furthering the cause of modern music; was founder-chairman of the Contemporary Music Assn. in Stockholm (1960) and secretary of the Soc. of Swedish Composers (1961–63). In 1964 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockholm. His works include 2 symphonies, Sonata for String Orch., Trittico for Oboe and String Orch. (1980), Sinfonietta for Wind Quintet (1959), 6 string quartets, String Trio (1955–56); Sonata for 2 Violins (1956), Divertimento for Oboe and String Trio (1962); Wind Quintet (1962); Pentastomos for Wind Quintet (1972–73) and other works.
