Hyungsup Lim

Hyungsup Lim (b. 21 April 1992) is a South Korean conductor and clarinetist whose artistic career bridges orchestral, operatic and choral repertoire with an international outlook shaped by European training and Asian professional activity. He is the Founder and Music Director of the Cham Philharmonic Orchestra and serves as Conductor at CHAM Musik Organisation, developing projects that combine artistic leadership with long-term institutional vision.

He completed the Mastère (2ème cycle supérieur) in Orchestral and Choral Conducting at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, following earlier studies in clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music, where he graduated with First Class Honours. His artistic development was shaped by mentorship with Jahbom Koo and further refined through masterclasses with leading figures including Riccardo Muti (Italian Opera Academy at the Tokyo Harusai Festival), Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Sian Edwards, Johannes Schlaefli, Jorma Panula, Nicolás Pasquet and Mark Heron. He has been a finalist in both the Hans von Bülow and Erno Lanyi Conducting Competitions.

Lim has held several music directorships in Korea, including the Cham Philharmonic Orchestra (2020–2025), Seongnae Cathedral Choir and Mokdong Academic Orchestra (2017–2020), and served as Principal Conductor of the Seoul World Philharmonic Orchestra. As guest conductor, he has appeared with the Tokyo Harusai Orchestra and the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.

His experience as assistant and cover conductor includes collaborations with the Seoul Metropolitan Opera (Macbeth), the National Chorus of Korea (Beethoven Symphony No. 9, Verdi Requiem), and the Korean National Symphony Orchestra(Langgaard Symphony No. 1), as well as major symphonic repertoire with regional Korean orchestras.

Alongside conducting, Lim maintains an active career as a clarinetist. He has performed professionally in both Korea and the UK, collaborating with ensembles such as the Philharmonia Orchestra under Andris Nelsons and the London Sinfonietta at the Royal Festival Hall. His orchestral experience includes projects with conductors such as Sir Mark Elder, Semyon Bychkov, Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Jane Glover.

Fluent in English, Korean and Mandarin Chinese, with advanced German and French, Lim also works professionally as a translator in German, French and Italian, reinforcing his international artistic profile.
