Hermann Abendroth

Hermann Abendroth was a German conductor and professor.

Abendroth was born on 19 January 1883 in Frankfurt. The son of a bookseller. Several other members of the family were artists.

After completing his studies at the Frankfurt Gymnasium, Abendroth traveled to Munich and, at his father's request, apprenticed as a bookseller for the first year, but then switched to studying music at the Munich Conservatory.

From 1914 to 1934, he led the musical life in Cologne as conductor of the orchestra and choir and director of the music school. Conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig (1934 – 1945), of the State Chapel in Weimar (1946 – 1956), etc. He toured successfully in many European countries, including Bulgaria (1953). He received a national award in 1949.
