Guerguan Tsenov

Conductor GUERGUAN TSENOV graduated from the Bulgarian National Academy of Music, Sofia, in the conducting class of Acad. Vassil Kazandzhiev. Later on, he continued his training in conducting at New York's Julliard School in the conducting class of James De Priest. In 2007, he was invited to become a scholarship student in conducting within the framework of the Aspen Music Festival and School in the United States, where he worked under the supervision of David Zinman. Tsenov’s other collaborations include Kurt Masur, renowned conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, George Manahan and Rossen Milanov. Immediately after his graduation from the Julliard School, Gergan Tsenov was invited to become the Principal Conductor of the New York University Orchestra. His most recent appointment was in the capacity of Principal Conductor of the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra, New York. Tsenov resides and works in the United States from 1999 onwards, where his conducting performances include collaborations with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, the Massapequa Symphony Orchestra, the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra, the Broadway Bach Ensemble, the Detroit Civic Orchestra and the Philadelphia Youth Symphony Orchestra. He has performed in concerts at the Kennedy Center (Washington), the Carnegie Hall (New York) and the Lincoln Center (New York). Over the past few years, Guerguan Tasenov devoted efforts almost exclusively on performance and propagation of music by Bulgarian composers. He is the founder and music director of New York-based Tsenov Chamber Ensemble. The primary mission of the thirteen-member string ensemble is to present and popularize Bulgarian classical music. In 2010, together with musicians from New York he performed two concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center with a program featuring entirely works of Bulgarian composer Petko Staynov. Within two years from the inception of the ensemble, some of the most emblematic Bulgarian pieces were given their first American performance, among them works by composers such as Lyubomir Pipkov, Alexander Raychev, Lazar Nikolov, Simeon Pironkov, Ivan Spassov and Vassil Kazandzhiev. In 2016, in collaboration with the new Symphony Orchestra, Tsenov conducted in the Bulgaria Hall a concert entitled Bulgarian Vanguard featuring works by composers Lazar Nikolov, Ivan Spassov, Bozhidar Spassov and Vassil Kazandzhiev. Great Bulgarian composer Vasil Kazandzhiev dedicated to him his sixth and seventh symphonies. In November 2016, Guerguan Tsenov made a studio recording with the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vassil Kazandjiev's Sixth Cascades Symphony and in May 2017 presented the world premiere of the work in Bulgaria Hall with the New Symphony Orchestra. His is the idea of the present concert with works of Bulgarian composers born in the thirties and prominent representatives of three generations, with two of the performances being actually world premieres.
