Gerhard Pflüger

Gerhard Pflüger was a German conductor.

Pflüger was born in Weimar, attended public school and high school in Dresden from 1913 to 1924. He then studied with Kurt Striegler and Fritz Busch at the Orchestra School of the Saxon State Orchestra in Dresden until 1927. From 1927 to 1930 he was soloist, conductor and choirmaster in Tilsit, East Prussia. From 1930 to 1932 he was first conductor in Stralsund, and until 1935 in Gotha. From 1935 to 1938 he was chief music director in Nordhausen. On 8 September 1937 he applied for membership in the Nazi Party (NSDAP) and was accepted on 1 April 1940 (membership number 8,376,609). Until 1940 he was first Kapellmeister in Altenburg, then in Meiningen.

From 1946 he was a member of the SEP (Social Democratic Party of Germany). From 1948 to 1955 he was general music director and artistic director of the Municipal Theater in Rostock. He also headed the conducting class at the Music University in Rostock. From 1949 to 1957 he was permanent conductor of the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, and from 1957 to 1973 he was in the Weimar State Orchestra. In addition, from 1962 he was professor and head of the conducting class at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Weimar.

In 1972 he was awarded the GDR Art Prize.
