Georgi Kostov

Composer, teacher, public figure, GEORGI KOSTOV is among the most prolific contemporary Bulgarian composers. He graduated in composition at the "Prof. PanchoVladigerov" National Academy of Music under prof. Pancho Vladigerov. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory. Since 1966 he has taught harmony at the NAM, since 1985 he has been professor of harmony and composition, and between 1989 and 2008 he was rector of the Academy. He was Secretary General of the WBC (1975-1985) and Minister of Culture (1995-1996). He is a recipient of the Order of Stara Planina and a number of prizes at composition competitions in Paris (1972), Sofia (1974), Berlin (1976), Helsinki (1969), Trento (1991), The Red Carnation (Sochi), The Sweet-poodle Lark, The Golden Orpheus, Melody of the Year, The Spring Radio Competition, etc. There are dozens of recordings of his works in Bulgarian National Radio, Bulgarian National Television, Balkanton, etc. He is the author of the operas "Monastic Woes", "The Woman with the Golden Hair" and "Misfortune", ballet "The Magic of Totoban", musicals "The Four Twins", "Casanova", choral and chamber works, pieces for wind and string orchestras, concertos for clarinet and orchestra, for French horn, string orchestra and timpani, concertino for viola and orchestra, chamber opuses and more than 1,000 choral, popular and children's songs.
