Federico Colli

Italian pianist FEDERICO COLLI (1988) is rapidly gaining worldwide recognition for his compelling, unconventional interpretations and clarity of sound. Praised by The Daily Telegraph for “his beautifully light touch and lyrical grace and called by Gramophone one of the more original thinkers of his generation, Federico Colli has gained worldwide recognition for his remarkable originality and a highly imaginative, philosophical approach to music-making distinguish the pianist’s multi-dimensional performances and recordings.

Following his early successes, which include 1st Prize at the Salzburg Mozart Competition in 2011 and Gold Medal at the Leeds International Piano Competition (2012), International Piano Magazine selected him as one of the “30 pianists under 30 likely to dominate the world stage in the years to come”. He has been awarded the Grosso d’argento for the international prestige he gives to his hometown of Brescia, and the UK Critics’ Circle music section includes him among the recipients of its 2018 awards.

Federico Colli graduated from the Milan Conservatory and studied at the International Piano Academy in Imola and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg under the direction of Sergio Marengoni, Konstantin Bogino, Boris Petrushansky and Pavel Gililov.

The first release of Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, recorded on Chandos Records for whom he is an exclusive recording artist, was awarded “Recording of the Year” by Presto Classical. The second volume of Scarlatti’s Sonatas was named “Recording of the Month” by both BBC Music Magazine and International Piano Magazine and it has been chosen by BBC Music Magazine as “one of the best classical albums released in 2020” as well as one of the best classical albums released in 2020 in BBC Music Magazine‘s list.

Since then, he has performed with renowned Orchestras including the Mariinsky and St Petersburg Philharmonic, London Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Accademia Nazionale di S. Cecilia and Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI and National d’Île-de-France. He has also worked with esteemed conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Dennis Russell Davies, Valery Gergiev, Yuri Temirkanov, Ion Marin, Thomas Søndergård, Ed Spanjaard, Vasily Petrenko, Sir Mark Elder, Sakari Oramo, Fabio Luisi, etc.

Federico Colli has also demonstrated his mastery of the piano in numerous recitals in some of the most famous concert halls in Europe, Asia, the USA and Japan. He has also played at prestigious musical forums such as the Ruhr Piano Festival in Dortmund, the International Dvořák Festival in Prague, the International Chopin and his Europe Festival in Warsaw, the Lucerne Festival and the Ravinia Festival in Chicago. In addition to live performances, Federico maintains a busy recording schedule. His future release ideas for Chandos Records include a Russian project focusing on Shostakovich and Prokofiev, as well as a multi-album project featuring Mozart’s solo and chamber repertoire.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the pianist created an educational series of short videos for his YouTube channel designed to rediscover Mozart’s Fantasy in C minor, K. 475, and place Mozart’s musical ideas in historical and cultural context.

In 2023 Federico Colli was selected by Fortune Italia Magazine as one of the most influential 40 under 40 of the Italian culture.
