Elliott Carter

American composer Elliott Carter (1908-2012) was born in New York. He studied English and music at Harvard University. He then went to Paris to study composition with Nadia Boulanger. He returned to the USA in 1935. Twice a Pulitzer Prize winner, Carter is one of the most celebrated classical American composers of the twentieth century. Experimenting with new ideas of composition, after a neoclassical phase, he went on to write atonal music. His compositions include orchestral and chamber music as well as solo instrumental and vocal works. Elliott Carter has taught music and other related subjects at a number of America’s top educational establishments including the Peabody Conservatory, Columbia University, Queen’s College, New York, Yale University and the Julliard School. Carter was productive in his later years, publishing more than 40 works between the ages of 90 and 100, and over 20 more after he turned 100 in 2008. He completed his last work, Epigrams for piano trio, on August 13, 2012.
