Dimitar Nikolov

Dimitar Nikolov (b. 1945) was born in Sofia in the family of intellectuals. He graduated from the National Academy of Music “Prof. Pantcho Vladigerov” in Sofia, studying composition with Professor Marin Goleminov. After graduating, he worked as Musical Editor in the Bulgarian National Radio. Apart from being a composer and editor, he is a member of the Board of the Union of the Bulgarian Composers as well. D. Nikolov’s works have been performed by highly professional Bulgarian musical formations – such as the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra and Mixed choir, the National Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra and Choir, the symphony orchestras of Bourgas and Vratza, the “Sofia Soloists” chamber ensemble, the chamber orchestra “Sofia”, the string quartet “Hors”, and others. The concerts were conducted by Vassil Kazandjiev, Kamen Goleminov, Rossitza Batalova, Vesselin Baitchev, Andrey Andreev, Grigor Pallikarov, etc. Dimitar Nikolov’s works were performed in Germany, Estonia, The Czech Republic and Slovakia. In 2006, the composer was awarded the biggest prize of the Bulgarian National Radio – “Sirak Skitnik”. The same year he got another prestige reward “The Golden Staff” of the Union of the Bulgarian Composers. In 2000 Dimitar Nikolov was awarded by His Holiness The Pope John Paul II the special silver medal, founded for the 2000th anniversary of Jesus Christ’s Birth – for the cycle of four symphonies the composer realized: N1 “TheTower Of Babel”, N2 “Save Our Souls”. N3 “The Flood”, N4 “Between Hell and Eden”. He composed other orchestra works as well – “Baroque Overture”, “Youth Overture” and “Sofia Poem” for symphony orchestra, “Romantic Variations” for string orchestra, “Space Ensembles B-A-C-H” for a changing orchestra.
