Biography

Artistic director of Mozart Collegium Vienna and music director of the Schwingungen ('Oscillations') concert series held in the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein, CHRISTIAN SCHULZ originates from a well-known Viennese family of musicians. He completed his studies in conducting and violoncello performance at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and embarked on a career as cellist, appeared as chamber and solo performer, and was recently engaged by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Together with Musicians from the Vienna Symphony, he found the Ambassade Orchestra Vienna and has led this ensemble as their principal conductor. Schulz has served as assistant to Vladimir Fedosejev, Yakov Kreizberg and Franz Welser Möst. Orchestras he has conducted include the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra (Bucharest), the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Beginning in 2001, he has been conducting annually concert and operatic productions featured at the Bregenz Festival. Highlights of his engagements in opera performances were the premiere of The Magic Flute at the Vienna Volksoper in 2007-2008, Don Carlos at the Arad New Opera Productions and the Cunning Vixen, Protagonist and Royal Palace in 2003, 2004 and 2008 at the Bregenz Festival. He was principal conductor of the State Philharmonic Orchestra of Arad and since 2005 – principal conductor of the Mozart Collegium Vienna. Among his recordings there are some award-winning productions, released in Canada, the US and Europe. In 2006, he became music director of the Schwingungen Concert Series at the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein. Since 2010, he has been working as artistic director of the Music Education Program of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Tehran. Since 2013, Schulz has been the principal conductor of the Wiener Meister Orchestra, comprised of members of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and since 2014 – the executive director of the Vienna Symphony Limited SYMPHONIA. President of the Vienna Symphony recording label. Since 2016, Christian Schulz has been active as director and conductor of the EntArte Opera in Vienna and professor in conducting and singing at the Richard Wagner Conservatory in Vienna, and since 2017 – as music director of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, guest conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Brazil.
