Bruno Walter

Bruno Walter Schlesinger (German: Bruno Walter Schlesinger, 15 September 1876 – 17 February 1962) was a German-born conductor and composer. He was born on 15 September 1876 in Berlin, but moved to various countries during the Hitler regime (1933–1939), settling in the United States in 1939. He worked at the opera houses in Berlin, Vienna and Munich, and conducted the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig (1930–1933). He toured many countries. He wrote theoretical works. He began using Walter as a surname in 1896 and especially after he was naturalized in Austria in 1911. He worked closely with Gustav Mahler, whose music helped establish him in the repertoire, held important positions with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin, among others, made recordings of historical and artistic significance, and is widely considered one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century.
