Alexey Muravliov

Soviet composer Aleksei Muravliov was born in 1924 in Tbilisi (Georgia), and started music lessons in early age with his mother and grandmother. During the Second World War, his family was evacuated to the Ural Region where he entered the Sverdlovsk conservatoire. In 1944, he was transferred to the Moscow conservatoire and studied Composition under Professor V. Shebalin and Piano under Professor G. Neygauz. In the same year, he wrote his popular symphonic poem The Azov-Mountain, which was awarded the State Prize. This piece turned out appealing to many famous conductors like E. Svetlanov, V. Fedoseev, L. Stokovsky (USA), and others. A. Muravliov had actively worked in the field of film music, and composed scores for more than 150 films. Furthermore, he kept on composing symphonic, chamber, instrumental and vocal music.
In 1967 he began working as teacher at the Moscow State Institute of Culture, and later he has been employed at the Gnesins State Musical Institute of Education (currently known as the Gnesins Russian Academy of Music). Since 1974, he has been teaching there a special course of study in Composition.
