Alexander Flyarkovsky

Soviet composer Alexander Flyarkovsky (1931-2014) graduated in 1955 the Moscow Conservatory in composition class of Professor Yuri Shaporin. His song Your Window won the competition award for the best song about Moscow and he started to work a lot in the genre of mass songs. A number of his works have gained wide popularity. As a student, the composer took part in a folklore expedition to the Bryansk region and recorded about 100 folk songs there. Later, he showed a constant interest in folk songs, collected and recorded them in Altai and in other regions, processed them for choral singing. In the period 1970-1980, he served as Deputy Minister of Culture of the RSFSR, but he left this post due to disagreement with the cultural policy of the authorities. From 1985 to 1990, Flyarkovsky worked as deputy chairman of the Soviet Peace Committee. In 1990, he was elected an academician of the Russian Academy of Cinematic Arts Nika. Among the music for films written by the composer, especially popular in 1976 were the exciting melodies of Flyarkovsky for the school melodrama The Joke (Walk through the quiet school floors ...). In 1991, Alexander Georgievich headed the composition class at the M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov State Music and Pedagogical Institute, where he is Professor of the Department of Musicology since 1992.
