Adam Dołżycki

Adam Dolzycki was born on March 8, 1886 in Lviv, Austria-Hungary. He graduated in piano and composition from the Lviv Conservatory, and studied conducting with E. Mlynarski in Warsaw and A. Nikisz in Leipzig. In the period 1915 - 1919 he conducted at the Warsaw State Opera. Then he was the chief conductor of the city opera in Poznan. In early 1937 he was invited to be the chief conductor of the National Opera in Sofia. From February 1937 to December 1938 he studied musically for the first time in Bulgaria the operas "Iris" and "Dead Eyes". He conducted repertoire operas and gave symphonic concerts with the State Philharmonic at the National Opera. Under his conducting, "Requiem" by Giuseppe Verdi was performed for the first time in Bulgaria. Due to disagreements on a number of issues with the management of the National Opera, he was forced to leave Bulgaria in early 1939. He returned to Warsaw, where he organized concerts during World War II. After the war, he settled in Germany. He died on September 9, 1972 in Marktredwitz, Germany.
